In music there are some figures who own their time period and their genre, and others who transcend them. And then there was David Bowie, who seemed to come out of nowhere, who sang and wrote and performed music that sounded like nothing that came before him, who changed everything that came after him, who seemed so much more than human during his lifetime, and yet made us feel so much more human for it. On the day of his death we try, and fail, to make sense of one of the oddest earthlings who ever walked among us.
